mud

i just built my own refugium following a spec i saw online,question is what should i fill it with????sand,mud or substrate.also i want caluerpa in it to feed my tangs.wich is the best way to go with this?

I would go with smaller grain sand and chaetomorpha algae instead because it does not go into a reproductive phase and pollute your tank.

There's different species of tangs and there's different species of Caulerpa. Not all tangs will eat all species of Caulerpa so I think you should test this first.

Beyond this, I don't know what type of corals you keep. Caulerpa's (primarily C prolifica and C toxifolia) are NOT a good choice if you keep SPS. The toxins in those two cultivars are quite strong and are a known growth inhibitor to SPS. All Caulerpas have these toxins but in the other species, the quantity of them is much lower.

Yes, Caulerpa will grow without the addition of Miracle Mud or Mineral Mud. However, they will grow slower because the way those muds work is by supplying Iron to the rhizomes allowing the Caulerpa to grow quicker.

 

Get Gracileria if you want to feed your tangs. Lettuce algae works great too.

 

well ive decided to go with fine live sand.My lfs sells live sand by the pound so im thinking to go that route. my fuge size is 29Lx11Wx16.5H dont know how much sand i should put in it though? ive read that 1.5 to 2 inches should be enough but i do not want to skimp on the sand if i need it....that is why i made it so tall..well as always i will wait on the more experienced aquarists for their opinion...thanks to everybody for their awsome input!;D
