    Does a refugium have to have a mud base?

    you can have whatever you want. You could go berlin if you wanted and just ump a ton of chaeto in there. Depends what you WANT to do with the fuge

    not required but does have many benefits such as leaching many of the micronutrients found in many of the supplement produts. This means there is no need to use those products for a year or more.

    I've alway felt it has pro's like Telgar mentioned but at the same time it is not practical imo because in a closed system those elements are used up and then you just have a bunch of wet dirt until you remove some and replace what you take out with a booster pack so I've never messed with it.

    I used it, I didn't really notice any real difference. I will probably just use sand next time.

    I use kitty litter..Special kitty, red bag walmart.(thats really all the mud is anyhow)...i like it cuz my mangroves root really well in it...
