Can I use a ratio of water to muriatic acid to clean calcium from pumps and impellers? My LFS said that they do.

    That's what I use.
I put about a gallon of water in a salt pail and dump in about half a cup of hydrochloric acid (Muriatic).
Just don't let it splash when you put it in, and if your skin is tender, use rubber gloves.
After putting in the dismantled parts to clean, remove and rinse once the foaming stops and check to see if it is all clean. Sometimes you have to put things back for a little while longer.
Works much better than vinegar and doesn't screw up the "O" rings on my 802 power heads like the vinegar does.
Don't leave things in too long if there is an epoxy type coating over the electronic motors and cord, like the 802's have.

Yes, just make sure to rinse it off well before use.

It works much better than vinegar. Most of our vinegar is so watered down that it is not that effective.

yes but straight distilled white vinegar is much safer and still cheap at about $1.50 a gallon. I reuse he vinegar over and over until the pH is not low enough to work anymore then toss it and start ove rwith fresh. Takes an hour or so of soaking is all when used straight and the coralline brushes and rinses right off.

I used the muriatic acid, worked well. I had to pour straight acid into my mag drive to get the calcium out.
