Help, my tank looks like yucky pond water! I am still waiting for it to cycle, but the thing is an eye sore. Is murky water part of the process? I mean, it is REALLY murky! I tested my ammonia and it came back zero. I have had my lights on because I have a xenia, green starburst polyp, and a cabbage leather in there. They were extras that were given to me. Might they survive the cycle? I wish I had something else to put them in until then.

I have a healthy bloom of brown diatom algae and some slimy stuff on my rocks and sand.

Should I do a small water change? Or just let it ride?

try adding some carbon to your filter media. that should help clear up the water.

and try cutting back on the lights to help control the algae

If the tank is cycling, i would not do a water change, it will just prolong the process. I dont think your corals will survive, but stranger things have happend.

and as said above. i would agree that adding some carbon to your filter media will help clear things up.

I am actually running some carbon in a Rena Xp2. I changed it out for fresh stuff about a week ago. It may be my imagination, but it seems that the water have progressivly gotten murkier since then.

It started out looking like diluted tea, now more cloudy yellow-ish.

I had very clear water for a week while my sand settle, then I added my uncure lr, and it looked like the diluted tea, and has gotten yellow in the four days.

OK, carbon should solve the problem. Are you running it in a canister filter (not sure if that's what a Rena XP2 is)? What kind of carbon are you using?

OK, keep running it that way and if it doesn't clear up in another week, let us know. Your tank is fairly new so you should expect things like this to happen. Hopefully your water will clear up soon!
