Hey all, new to these forums, and new to coral in general. So I have a few questions about the mushroom coral my lfs just gave me. He said it was a good starter and doesn't require as much as most of the other corals so I told him I would give this a try before I upgrade my lighting (Which is very soon).

My question : I am curious about where to place the little guys! He said a medium flow area, which I think I found but I just want to make sure and see what you guys thought. below are some pics of the coral itself and my tank setup. Constructive feedback would help! Like I said I am new >_<

mushroom corals should be placed at the bottom of your tank

It depends on your lighting, and you mentioned needing to upgrade; if your current fixture provides low to medium light, they can be placed mostly anywhere. That's what they prefer, but they will adapt to most anything.

Okay thanks guys! Also they look a little different then most I have seen. Maybe just because they are new in the tank? or is that what they normally look like?

It may take them a day or two to fully acclimate to your tank.

I think your placement looks fine. Medium flow should be fine as well. I have mine about mid tank as well. The only thing you might want to think is putting them on the bottom on the sand bed until they are used to your lighting.

Give em a few days, mine at first took 2 days to fully lay out, but that's what you want to see. I've had my single mushroom (red) for one month now, and have already propagated it into 3 healthy shrooms, and my light isn't all that great. If you want to make the little guys comfortable, feed them a tiny bit of something, right in the middle, turn off all the water pumps, and wait ten minutes for them to eat it, that'll give em' some strength and nutrition for the changing environment.

Okay so just set them on the bottom on the sand then? Move them up in a few weeks or what? Like I said my lighting is weak, and within the next month it will be upgraded for more corals.

That is what I do with all my corals when I introduce them to my tank. With your lighting being weak, you might be fine with it where it is placed.

But, to answer your question. Yes, normally what I do is place them on the sand bed for a week or two then see how they are doing. After that I would start moving it up the tank until it is in its desired position.
