maybe i shouldve put this thread int he frag section, but since im a newb, i decided to put it here...anyway i have a simple question...

if i have a mushroom mounted to a rock, if i take a razor and split it down the middle, leaving the existing base of the mushroom split in half (but still mounted on the rock), will this successfully create two mounted mushrooms??

If it was healthy before the fragging attempt, the answer is yes.

Make sure that you split it through the mouth as well, as this should help the coral heal faster.

yeah, i figured i have to get it through the eye or stem since this is what will still be existing on the rock...i went to my LPS and they had this nice yard sale...i got a nice light system for really cheap...i think i might try this later and report back

No need to split the mouth, it will be two no matter where you cut it. Mushroom are in my opinion the most forgiving corals when it comes to fragging, well at least the smooth ones are, hairy one are not as easy. the last time fragged a mushroom I took a pair of scissors and cut a 3" one into about 12 pieces and 11 out or the 12 lived, the 12 actually got loose and sucked into the my filter intake.

What I do is get a small plastic tub and put a layer of crushed coral in the bottom. Put the mushrooms in and cover it with a piece of wedding Veil and put in in a low flow part of the tank. Within 2 weeks they will all attach to a piece of CC and I then glue the CC to another rock and let them grow. Have fun!

This is a good question. The first time I had tried fragging/splitting mushrooms, I was unsuccessful. I had watched a little video on how to do it, too. But, they were hairy mushrooms, so that may be why. I actually just split one of my larger hairy mushrooms and all worked out this time around.
