I have a question. I have a rock with about 15-20 mushrooms on it. ever since bringing home they extend and expand every day and retract at night. about 4 days ago I noticed some of the bigger heads were stretching and the stalk was getting to be more or less a string. day before yesterday came home to a mushroom on the ground, yesterday another one. I put them in a jar in the tank with rubble on the bottom to attach to. Any idea what causes them to do that? I have them mid hgt. in a 55 gal, with 2 10k daylight Compact Flouescent and 2 actinic Compact flourescent bulbs?

    thanks

Possibly too much light and they are "melting". Try moving them lower in the tank or under an overhang. Mushrooms tend to not like too much light.

You know I thought maybe so too but does it make sense that they "stretch" towards it first or is that just their way of detaching from the rock? I sure didnt think that CF lights would be too much

Its a for sure sign that they don't like where they're at. I get crowded out babies floating all over my tank all the time. Stretching insures they'll get caught by a good flow. Maybe they're just looking for a new crib ;)

IME shrooms tend to prefer being a little bit shaded. But if there leaning towards the light I would think that they need more light. How high up are they? Or like Nana said they could just be crowded out.

well I havev not had any others fall, my guess is crowding, they were pretty bunched up on the rock to where they were always fighting to be on top of the one next to it, this may be the reasonn they are stretching? thanks

Mine do this all the time, the little peice they leave behind actually turns into a new mushroom most of the time.

Same thing happened to one of my mushroom rocks.

Started with ~15, all but 2 'jumped' off the original rock, and I've seen them here and there in dark nooks and crannies about the tank, they wanted small dark places.

The 2 that stayed on the original rock are sweet and big though!
