I am lovin' this tank so far!
I use ten roughly when it hit 7 months old after I upgraded the lighting hair alhea and diatoms began forming and in a matter of weeks it was taking over the tank! I battled this problem for probably close to 2 months to no avail! I was using tap water at the time and figured that is where the phosphates were coming from. With little money to buy a RO/DI unit I ended up downsizing all the way to a 10 gallon, purchased a 5 gallon jug and filled it with water you purchase anywhere that fills the 5gal jugs. This way water for water changes will last a while. Less money down the drain in salt and purchasing the water itself (which is only $2 anywayl lol). After the first day it cleared up nicely. I was still using the cansiter filter that I used in the 33 gallon, which is a Fluval 205 (rated for up to 40gals), so I have lots of filtration, flow and water volume added to the tank. I am unsure how many lbs of LR I used as I don't have a scale, but by looking at it I'll have to guess about 15lbs or so. The lighting being used isn't as intense as the T5 HO fixture I was using in the 33gal, which probably contributed to the algea growth. I filled the 10gal with the water from the 33gal and over the course of 6 days did small water changes to replace the phosphate infested water with clean jug water. I also placed a good size chunk of Cheato in the back of the tank behind the rockwork to soak up any nitrates and phosphates created from stiring the sandbed. I scrubbed all the hair algea and diatoms off the rocks with a brush in tank water as to not kill anything in the rocks, the last thing I wanted was to send the new 10gal into a cycle with all my fish and corals still in there. So far I haven't seen any hair algea and only a slightly small amount of diatoms forming on one rock. And whatever I missed to clean off with the brush my clean up crew are quickly taking care of! So far so good.

Thanks, since then I have changed things around because I underestimated the size of my frogspawn lol. Had to make more room for him.
