The thing about black sand is it shows EVERYTHING.

Deffinately start from scratch, you could boil the rock as well outside in a pot on a BBQ, don't do it inside for obvious reasons ;D

Well Im not "lazy", its more impatient!! Here's the craigslist add Its the only picture I have right now. Ive got it outside cleaning it already...I cant believe someone could let a tank go this bad! Oh well, I feel I still got a good deal at $100. The rock itself cost that much

I find the black sand stays looking much nicer longer then white sand.

Ya I'd start fresh also. Especially with such a small tank.

Going to go get some sand(hopefully I find black), some water and a few pieces of live rock to add. Question is, how long do I need to let the other rock sit outside to kill off all the nasty $hit?

*And is there any black sand one would recommend...or not recommend?

In case you don't know (not being a smart azz)...the mantra here is "go slow, let it grow"
so first thing of all things is to NOT be in a hurry...get the rocks out and clean the chit out of 'em spray they heck out of them and set them in the sun for a couple days or until completely dry.. or boil them in a big pot..we are not talking about a lot of rock, so I mean for 20.00 bucks you could replace them and be pretty darn sure you have no surprises popping up..jmo...you gotta understand that its like a good paint job...90% preparation.. If it were me, I would buy some new rock with this rock in mind for adding later...then you can take your time and let the bio die off the funky stuff....and add it later...as you grow..again, jmo.:)

If your starting from scratch..you don't need no $4.00 a lb "live rock"..dry rock is pretty cheap....how much rock you got in that 14 gallon that your wanting to add more?... were just yapping now...so, this is how ya get it done...right....right? ;D ...The picture in the craigslist add...is that just one big rock?
