First coral, aiptasia anemone....get rid of it before it spreads. Crab claw does look like an emerald crab which is reef safe and a good scavenger. The snail in the pic is an astrea snail. Not sure what kind of hermit that is. Looks like you are on the right track to a nice reef tank. Keep us posted.

Now I feel terrible about catching the crab... I accidentally killed it in the process of catching it, ugh.

Anyway, what's the best way of getting rid of the aiptasia without spending money on some sort of solution to kill it? Or, is that the only way?

get a few peppermint shrimp after your done cycling, they usually go straight for aiptasia and tear it up.

Thanks for all of your inputs! My tank is now cycled and I'm looking in to getting a pair of clowns in the next week or two.

Question about introducing too much too soon:
I have 5 snails, 5 crabs, and a nessarius snail. The LFS has a deal for 5 astrea snails, 1 peppermint shrimp (which I want to eat aptasia that hitchhiked on some live rock), an emerald crab, 2 nessarius snails, 5 red leg hermits and a turbo for 30 bucks.

    1) is this a good deal?
    2) is this clean up crew TOO MUCH for my tank?
    3) if i were to purchase these things and introduce them to my tank, would it overload it? what if i introduced them with a pair of clowns... overload? how about with some more live rock? (i'm still building up the live rock).

Also, are sand sifting stars worth 15 bucks? i love star fish.

Another question... what's the difference between blue leg hermits and red legs? I've only got red legs now, wouldn't mind some blues instead of some reds in that deal.

    Thanks all, you're the best.

I would expect to pay around $20 for that package at my LFS, but that might just be a location thing. I would send an e-mail to reef cleaners (forum sponsor) and see what they recommend for your setup and what they will charge you.

That LFS package is in no way too much for your setup provided its already cycled . . . inverts add little to no bio load to your tank, so there's no worry about an overload to your system. I would not get a sand sifting star for your tank as it will probably starve in such a small tank. instead look into brittle (anything but the greens) and / or serpent stars.

About the hermits, I like the blue legs personally and I only have around 15 or so tarding around in my 125 with 25 or so astrea snails.

That's a steal around here. Shoot, just an emerald crab here is 8.50, peppermint shrimp are 17.00, 5 snails for 10.00 and so on........

look into green clown gobys there great fish with alot of personality just buy brine and soak it in garlic extract also i say no to the six line. i have one and i love him but he is aggresive and he is small if you do get one get one as your last fish so there not aggresive thats what worked for me atleast just dont get one first. also chromis are good say no to any type of dragonet even though i think there the coolest fish there are it will starve with in three months. also dont get algae blennys there not all that they live up to be and dont make a big dent on algae in your tank.

Hi all! I've made some brief upgrades to my tank:

Got 2 peppermint shrimp, 5 more snails, 5 more crabs, some live rock... the scape is much better looking now! I'll get pics up soon.

I also got some bright green (lime green) algae growing on some rock which doesn't scrape off... I'm told this is the beginning of Coralline algae?

Anyway, my tank has been running for 3 weeks now and the levels are dropping back to zero (after my addition of the shrimp and more rock etc yesterday). At what point should I change my carbon pad filter? If I switch it out for a new one now, would I disrupt anything in the tank?

    Thanks everybody! Pics soon.

    Hi David

IMHO you will do only good and no harm at all switching out the carbon filter pads
I have a coffee mug full in a mesh bag on my 70 and I throw it away and replace it every 4th weekend.

nice looking set up by the way
