it is normal about 2 weeks into a new tank (upgrade from a 30) for you to get a high amount of hair algae on the substrate and glass right? that should go away once the system is balanced...right?

ok at this point my water comes back at 0's for all levels accept nirate which is still at 20ppm. the tank is now 2 weeks old and I have cyano, and green hair algae all over the sand, glass and LR. is it now cause it is technically a new tank? or am I missing something. I am working on getting more LR and have someone that can get some some great prices...like 3.50 per/lbs. so I am going to be doing that. will LR help or is there more I need. it sounds like I will need phosphate reactor also..... pls help

a phosphate reactor will help, so will a fuge, i would take care of it now before adding corals. you can also try turning you photo period back until you get rid of the algae

well eventually you would want more rock..alot more. I don't think it will help with the problem.

+2 with the PO4 reactor, when i put mine online...the hair algae was coming off in clumps.

now i run that and my clean up crew consists of 4 trochus snail and 2 hermit crabs...they keep up fine!!

Well, I would think it shouldn't be this bad if you just transfered from one tank to another. One possible problem could be if you transferred the sand or substrate as well. Over time it can trap nutrients and detritus which become nitrates eventually. This will get trapped in the substrate if you disturb it.

Did the other tank have any algae issues?
I would start off by cutting back on your feedings, in frequency and amount. And running some ferric oxide to remove phosphate, you don't necessarily need a reactor, but that helps make it much more effective.

well yes I used the water and rock from the old tank however I did not use the sand, it is all new sand. I only feed every 3 days and I do not pour the water in. I only put in the food itself. I also only do enough, that it gets eaten within 30 seconds. I also use a phosphate pad that is in the sump/filter, so water flows through it before going into the sump and protien skimmer. the old tank also had algae problems, but mostly cyano and not GHA.

ok, well I have done all of my tests again. everything again is at zero accept for nitrate which is at 20ppm. I am raising my PH which was at 7.8. and I have not run my lights at all since yesterday. I have my tank starting to fill with GHA all over my sand and LR, also have a good amount of cyano also. do you think raising the PH and not light for awhile will help get rid of the algae issues?
