I am thinking of starting a sump tank, maybe a 20 or 30 gal for my 55gal behind the tank threw the wall (furnace room). I was wanting to do a algae scrubber instead of a fuge and such. The extra maintance doesn't bother me. However, with the Eshopps Overflow box would I be ok with 75 gal capacity unit, with 500 gph return pump? I've heard that Mag 5 pumps would do the trick.

Would I want to run the overflow straight to the algae scrubber with the fear of it clogging up? Or have an additional pump feeding the scrubber, then have the run out going to the return pump?

Also with my sump tank in a seperate room (furnace room) should I place it up off the floor on a stand, or on the floor?

I was also thinking to switch around the skimmer and the scrubber.

I'm not a fan of hob overflow boxes at all. I would try to drill but it looks like ur tank is already setup. Anyways, if your going to use a hob overflow then I would definitely do a pump fed scrubber. Also you may wanna remove the skimmer once you get the ats online. If you build a good scrubber then there won't be a need to skim.

No the tank has been set up for 4 months now. Even better news! Yeah that's what I was thinking to pump threw it. What is the gph rating on a scrubber?

I don't wanna link from my phone bc its a pain, but search algae scrubber basics. Its in the "I made this" section. Gph is based on your screen size. Screen size is now based on how much you feed. A narrower - taller screen is more efficient since you need 35gph per inch of screen width. You need to read the new sizing guides in that thread to determine how to build it.

You wont want the overflow going directly into the scrubber. Going straight to the skimmer is gonna push the full force of the flow. I tried it that way the first time, it was alot of flow and alot of noise. I recommend T'ing it off with the main line going to your sump and the other T going thru the skimmer, then also into the sump. Install a valve in there to adjust to the flow to the scrubber.
