well a fuge basically is a place where you can grow macro algae to help remove nitrates and other nutrients
and live rock rubble is just pieces of live rock that is broken up.

Making me feel better about my decision Jake. I have dealt with freshwater tanks, but being a scuba diver I guess has given me the itch for a sw tank. My girls parents are giving us a 150 gallon show tank with 300lbs of live rock in Feb., so I thought I would prep myself by getting a biocube 14. I ordered it and will have it next week. First thing is to get rid of the balls and put some rubble in there. Thanks for all of the post, please let me know if I should start with anything else.

    Biocube 2nd chamber ?

Hello everyone! I am a newbie! My 2 year old has been wanting fish and introduced me to the hobby and this was supposed to be for him but I think I am having more fun! lol Anyways, here's my question, I am having a hard time understanding what goes into the 2nd chamber. I took the factory filter out out of the 1st chamber. I also took the bioballs out of the 2nd chamber, the guy at the LFS said to put carbon filter in there. I am confused about how to do this. Its one long sheet of carbon fiber filter. How do I cut it, put it in? He also told me LR in the middle chamber wasn't necessary. I just added the LR today, usually how long does it take before the tank is cycled and I can add 2 clown fish? Thank you!

Here is what we have so far...

    Hi Guys.
I have an 8 gal. and a 29 gal. Biocube. I don't know where you guys get this "power goes out and it overflows" stuff from. If power goes out, the water level goes DOWN. Don't forget, you have 3 chambers in there and 2 of them are only 1/4 full (the wet/dry chamber & return). When power goes out, they fill up and the water level goes down. That's one of the biggest reasons why I love my cubes.
Also, the white line on the side (water level). Whatever level the water is in that chamber, is also in the 2nd chamber (the wet/dry filtration). If you fill the water too high or "above the max line" then you have too much water in the wet/dry filtration thus defeating the purpose. Look at any wet/dry filter system and you'll see that only the bottom layer of balls is submerged, the rest are exposed to air and water for the bacteria to grow.
My 29 gal. has lr rubble and the 8 gal. has Bioballs. I see no difference whatsoever in the filtration except that I know for a fact that Bioballs filter out ammonia better, otherwise, I have the same algae problems in both tanks.
Another BS story about Biocubes is that you can't keep anemones. I have a bubble tipped anemone in both tanks. The 8g averages 4.5 watts per gal., and the 29g averages only 2.5 watts per gal. and they're BOTH doing just fine. In the 8g. I have a maroon/gold band clown (wild) and he took right to it. The 29g has 3 false percula clowns (tank raised) and none of them give the anemone the time of day. Go figure.
