I understand the point of not running carbon during the cycle but I have never heard of it releasing phos into the tank, if that was the case wouldn't a ro/di release phos into the water when it goes through the carbon filter? I guess if you leave it in longer then the recommended use but that's with any media you run.

I am wondering why you are using LR rubble instead of sand? Or am I missing something?

As far as the lighting goes, it depends on how many watts your fluorescent lamp is and what type it is. People tend to use about 90-100watts minimum when lighting a fuge. Some use less, or more of course, it just depends on how much you want your cheato to grow, and of course, the faster it grows the more nitrates it will consume.

The LR was what was being suggested for use on the bio-cube 2nd chamber. I think sand would just get sucked into the third chamber and back into the tank.

Yea, I went with sand at first and it got sucked into the pump over time... I also went with mud but also noticed it was being sucked in. So, I went with LR rubble and also checked with alot of modders and they all felt LR Rubble was best.

on the phos stuff - just google it, u'll see the massive discussions about it. It was enuff that I gave up and went against the carbon. The biocube 8 is the only one with carbon in it and that's cause it's mostly just FOWLR (minus a small gsp) ... ;)

A lot of scraping with a razor blade... It doesn't come off easily. What seemed to work best for me was to use the point of the blade to score the area (lots and lots of scraped lines) then go back over it with the blade held flat like a windshield ice scraper.

I was surprised that it never actually scratched the acrylic.

I guess my fuge is different than your bio cube fuges, I don't know what 2nd chamber means, etc. :)

We're basically talking about retrofitting our bio-cubes to have a refugium in the back chambers instead of bio-balls. It's a different scenario then what would be a typical refugium.
