If you find a container bigger than the biocube that holds water, I would just pour salt water into that container and put the biocube in there. This will keep negative pressure up and the leak will slow down (wont stop it totally unless you level the water out). This will buy you some time.

Hey Cheryl, stupid ghetto ingenuity here but if he were to mix 55 gallons of water (or buy salt water from the LFS) and put it in a 60 gallon Brute Rubbermaid type container (long, not tall) wouldn't he be able to use this as a QT for the Tang? I'm sure nitrites and amonia would spike quickly but if he does 20-30 gallon water changes every week he can buy himself a week or two..

Btw, sorry for the hijack but I did a 8 gallon water change (my total volume is 10.2gallon) and my alk is back to normal and so is everything else.. My calcium drops quick from 480 to 300 though in 3-4 days. I'm tired of using chemicals (balance and calcion).. Think I'm going to start mixing my own salt (coral pro) and do 6-8 gallon changes every week.. Thanks for your help!

    Hi Frank. :)

Basically you are suggesting soft cycling the Rubbermaid container. When I refer to soft cycle it means to me a way of preserving live stock and avoidance of toxic ammonia and nitrite levels by performing water changes until the biological filter can efficiently complete the nitrogen cycle.

I believe Matrix already has a tank running with cured live rock and cycling products so in my mind the new tank is already cycling, so he just needs to do what you suggested regarding having adequate SW to preform wc to prevent ammonia and nitrite from reaching toxic levels in the new tank.

By all means you can do as your suggested, but you need a heater and power heads. Tangs become symptomatic with Cryptocaryon irritans if you even look at them the wrong way. In my opinion the already functioning new tank would provide a more stable environment, lesser of two evils so to speak.

How big is the new tank? If you can do a 10% water change, and slowly acclimate the fish to the new tank. You could technically take water out of there current tank and replace it with water out of the new tank, just swap out water from one tank to the other. The water from new tank can be replaced with water from the biocube.

Good it worked out for you then. Do not be surprised if the yellow goby shows up, they can hide in rock work for a long time.
