As some of you may know, my Picasso clown, Pablo was DOA Friday morning. He was going to go in my 90 gallon. I now have store credit that I don't really want to waste. I'm thinking about getting a mate for my clown Cosmo (he lives in my 37). He's been in the tank almost 6 months. Do you think it's too late to add a smaller clown? I really don't want the little one to get hurt in anyway.

Thanks for the help (and karma to you!!)!

hey kacy. is the clown you have now the male or female? was it paired up before? only asking because you may want to get the opposite of what you have now, and save it changing to whatever you might get. sounds painful. :) but no, definitely not too late if you want to be a matchmaker. :)

No you can add a smaller clown pretty much anytime. Yours should already be female, depending on how long you've had it, and should be happy to accept a submissive male into the tank. IMO the best way to get a pair is to keep one until it begins to show growth and maturing, then add a second small one.

LOL I have no idea what Cosmo is. He was a tiny baby when I bought him and he lived by himself. But the clown that would be coming from this store would be about half the size of Cosmo, so then Cosmo would become female? Right? Lol I'm not sure how all that works.

As a side note, Cosmo is kind of a jerk at first to new additions, but then after a few days he calms down.

How big is he right now? 6 months is not that long IMO. I think you would be fine with adding another one. You will probably see the territorial display once he enters the tank, it's scary but it's normal. As long as the established clown doesn't nip or bite the new one, they will be OK. But it might take a couple of days or longer to get used to each other! What kind of clown do you have now?

I just attempted to measure Cosmo, lol and he appears to be about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. I'd say closer to the 1 1/2 though. He wouldn't stop moving for me! Made it difficult on me. What a jerk! ;) He's a tank raised ocellaris clown.
