I have drilled many holes and Tangster showed me a good way to do it. Use 3 in 1 oil to lube the bit and you will have no problems. I just use plumbers puddy to create a dike around the hole to keep all the oil around the bit. Go extra slow at the end and you will have no problem. It would take me 15 to 20 min a hole on my 265g

I just had a few holes drilled by a mirror shop by me. Although they have a drill press with a plunging bit that dives lower than the base of the press; I noticed they use a squeeze bottle of a 10% antifreeze solution. These guys have been in business a very long time. To see them using this antifreeze solution says a lot to me.

If ever I did it myself I'd use the same lube.

    Brilliant discussion!

Does anyone know if some brands of aquariums tend to drill better than others?

not sure but i can tell you that the tank i broke was a Top fin from petsmart. It was only a 10 gallon tank but still the glass seemed very thin (1/8 or 3/32). but i am pretty sure the crack was from user error, since the second one went fine after slowing down on the drilling.
