I brought home a firefish 3 days ago. I checked the parameters before so they are all in line, so as salinity and temp.

While I was acclimating the fish (30 min into it), I decided to check the salinity and found that it was around 1.020, so the salinity must have been a lot lower. I was pretty surprised because other items (corals) I bought from the same store had a salinity of 1.025. So, I took few more hours acclimating the fish slowly to bring it up to 1.025 (to my tank).

First night and second day seems fine, but on the third night, I had to move the 1/2 rocks from my tank to get rid of of a fish. While I was removing the rocks, he was hiding under the rocks at the opposite side which I didn't touch. After everything was put in, the water was a little cloudy, but cleared up with few minutes. I saw the firefish for the last time. The next day I couldn't find him. Yesterday, I found him dead, floating.

I bought 2 blue legged hermits, 3 tonga, 1 red shroom and 1 red monti at the same time. I already have some shrooms, star polyps and a goby in the tank before.

Any idea what caused the death? Was it because of the salinity or the moving of the rocks? Thanks for reading this long event.

It sounds like you aclimated him fine. The stress of the rocks being moved around could have done it. More than likely something was wrong with him. There are no history that comes with the new fish. I would not blame yourself.

I just got two firefish the other day, and noticed that they are a lot more timid than my damsels (not really surprising, if you ask me). Every time something changes, be it the lights or my shadow passing by, the zip under a rock. If they are easily spooked, it's not reaching too far to assume that they are easily stressed, too.

yeah i thought i might have scared him to death as well. I didn't know firefish are that timid. It probably felt like the world was coming down on it when I was moving the rocks.
