    All good advice to contemplate. I didn't notice anyone mentioning to check on craig's list or perhaps a local reefer's forum. I'm not sure where you are located. Sometimes you can find a good deal on some higher end skimmers. There is always a risk though in terms of functioning.

    I agree with all saying to start the cycle with a shrimp. Definitely - bad advice about adding fish from the LFS - I may actually try to find another shop that has more knowledgeable staff. Once the cycle is done, then some clean up crew and then fish. Add the fish slowly so that your system can build up the needed bacteria to support more bioload.

    I don't think you need a skimmer before you start to add fish but I would get one soon after doing so.
