Just remember if your keeping the fish in it, remove and add the sand in 3rds. Do 1/3 at a time, you can use a divider to separate 1/3 then remove the CC and add the sand. Wait a week or so then move on to the next. Other wise you cant start a mini cycle that can hurt the fish.

well i was planning on taking them out of the tank... to kinda re start everything.. its a mess. ( see the pic at the begging of the thread)
so since they will be moved. we will wait for the cycle. i think is much faster and simple that way.

we will need to remove the gravel and the plastic decorations etc.. and maybe get a canister or overflows.. power heads.. im surprised this fish are alive.

Ya that is much easier if you have another tank. Sadly I did not. And yes that tank is in bad shape.

Any chance you could talk with a lfs and see if there is any way they could give you a deal on supplies or equipment? Tell them it may create a lot of interest in keeping reef or even freshwater tanks and it may be some good advertising for them. We had a birthday party for my daughter the other day here at our house and there were a lot of questions about my tank and some even walked away saying they wanted to look into getting a tank. Just an idea. Or look on craigslist for used equipment.
I would also definitly use a sump. Maybe you could ask for donations from a local reef club. I imagine lots of club members have all sorts of used equipment stored away. I know I have a 48"pc light, protein skimmer, powerheads, heater, and other misc. items. Maybe even ask here in the equipment forum. You may have to pay for shipping, but it might be worth a try.
