Well here's a small first installment on my small system build. It's been a choppy slow process but a labor of love every step of the way. It started with one 55 gallon FOWLR consisting of 50 pounds LR, 40 pounds BR, old (forgot the brand) skimmer that never worked more than 48 hours without taking apart and cleaning tubes (pain!), 3250 gph powerhead, 3.5 inches florida crushed coral (I know that was a mistake now), Normal output light (one), and a heap of HOPE! LOL

That was about three months ago and soon after putting the first few fish in a customer (thanks Gabby) told me about 3Reef!

Lighting was upgraded to Aquatic Life T5X2, now has 90 pounds LR, about 20 pounds base rock.

built DIY sump fuge out of a 40 long fish tank, silconed in glass baffles with room for pump 1800 gph mag drive pump (going to be more than just the 55 hooked to this fuge when all is done), about 3 sq ft of DSB (4" deep) in fuge, with 4 little mangrove pods in sand just sticking out of water.

Next is to build DIY pvc overflows for 55 and two 10gallon DT's and plumb them to the sump and back.

Also the crushed coral is coming out of the 55 to be replaced with egg crate and sand.

going to try to post a pic of the current 55 and one of the 10's now in use but not hooked to sump yet. hope this works... if it does then Thanks Corailline! and if not... it was MY fault! LOL

Here's a shot (nearly FTS LOL) of my first 55!

Both pics were taken by a customer for me with his camera since I still haven't found my digital cam :(

    Thanks for takin a look!
    It's my little start :)

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Congradulations GreyBeard.

    Looks good.

If you have any smaller powerheads consider putting one in the smaller tank. They really help with good surface movement, which increases gas exchange and helps maintain a higher pH.

Great start on the 55 gal, nice scape. It is going to look really good when eventually add some fish.

    :)

as a matter of fact, the 10 gallon now has a 425gph hydor in it along with the bubbler... great idea tho! LOL

AND I forgot to mention livestock in the 55... one rock blenny (i call him homer 'cus he looks like Homer Simpson in the face), one scooter dragonet, and a CBS. along with about 80 margarita snails, 25 tongan nassarius snails, 20 astreas, 30 cortez red leg hermits, and just yesterday 50 Mexican turbos and one yellow eye Kole tang baby (about 3.5 inches)

yes I have to ADD algae to this tank now! lol

    Thanks for posting Corailline!

I have a very small pet store in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Very very small town :)

Just getting started into salt water fish at the store as per many customer requests since pet stores/LFS here are usually about 100 miles apart.

Nice work so far! You could raise the water level in the 55g a bit maybe?
