How many different kinds of algae grow on my liverock? Right now I have sever different looking kinds on it now. I should be nearing the end of cycleing i my tank will be 6 weeks old tomorrow its a 6gal Fluval Edge with a 7lb rock inside. I have several different types of algae on my rock which I expected there have to be millions of different types of algae but I guess the question is how can i ID bad algae, or is there such thing?

SushiGirl dropped you a great link that you should book mark – however, from your pictures I doubt it will help you at the moment. In the first picture the red algae appears to bump up and be taking form, hard to tell but it almost appears to be a sponge to me and not algae at all. I can see lots of bleached out coralline algae that will return in time to color up those rocks nicely. If you can get a close up shot we might be able to help you more.

In the interim, check out the Nuisance algae thread. At 6 weeks old any algae is good and expected so no worries.

Did you start off with all dry rock or bought base rock? I agree with CG that it looks more like a sponge to me.

The rock you see is the only rock in it other than live sand, its a 7lb piece of live rock and i bought it still wet, not sure what dry rock or base rock is, reminder that this is a SW tank.

Looks like foraminiferans to me. Common on live rock and no worries.
Base rock/dry rock are one in the same generally and are 'dead' live rock usually mined from ancient reefs that are now inland.

Sammy - let the film be on the pipe and just clean the viewing glass as necessary. Keep up posted and good luck !
