Ammen to that, I wish I had taken it a little bit slower to realy understand what I was embarking on and not studding the things as they happened.

    WOw,

    HI,
That post says it all, it explains all the problems that can be encountered in any new system, I saw the same thing it took a good 6 mos for my DSB to stabilize and actually work, I still have little algae blooms and swings with fluidized filters ,sumps, skimmers, two dsb's and a reforguim.
Its all about the toxins found in bacteria, plants, fish, inverts, coals, and even some of those anemones.
Holy snake poop better change the carbon weekly.;D
    hehe

I had a micro instructor explain bionary reproduction in a perfect environment as this 1 bacteria could create a mass larger than the planet earth in 24 hours, you would need a huge export of toxins and waste and a huge source of food, but it give you a pretty good idea of the potential for growth. Can you immagine the waste it would create. I ve seen people treated with med for infection only to get sicker from the endotoxins tha bacteria release when the are killed that what really makes you sick a very nasty defense mechanism.
but it gives you an idea of the potential damage that can be done over feeding our fish in closed incubator of saltwater. More of that MICRO101
    Bacterial Reproduction

better to understand the good bugs versus the bad in animals and systems.
((In a mutualistic relationship, both the bacteria and the host benefit. For example, there are several kinds of bacteria which live inside the mouth, nose, throat, and intestines of humans and animals. These bacteria receive a place to live and feed while keeping other harmful microbes from taking up residence.

A parasitic relationship is one in which the bacteria benefit while the host is harmed. Pathogenic parasites, which cause disease, do so by resisting the host's defenses and growing at the expense of the host. These bacteria produce poisonous substances called endotoxins and exotoxins which are responsible for the symptoms that occur with an illness.
    ))

Hi - Many thanks to all who replied with ideas about my problems.
In answer to Reefdiver72's question - I keep the heat at 79-80 C

Lunatik 69 - Here are the measurements for the tests I have done.

Salinity 1.023,1.024 sometimes before topping up water, 1.025
    PH 8
    Ammonia 0
    Nitrate 0
    Nitrite 0

I haven't tested for Copper or Calcium. Will have to get a test kit.

Many thanks, Jason for your most informative answer. I've printed it and will read and reread it carefully. Lots of information there.

Thanks, Omard, for the info about Skilters. Will try to do something about mine.

Meanwhile, my shrimp snail and toadstool coral seem to be thriving. On the rock at the base of the toadstool, three tiny new toadstools are growing.

I'm a bit aftaid of radical water changes. Wouldn't they have the potentian to shock the creatures in the tank? How necessary are water changes, and how often?

I'll take a water sample to my LPS and perhaps try a couple of chromis again.
