so i think i figured it out.
i got the majority of my rock second hand from another reefer. it had a bunch of algae on it when i got it so i scrubbed it off and 6 months later no problems.
well about a month ago i got severe hair algae problems. i got a phosban reactor, sea hare, water changes, changed lighting hours, everything. nothing helped.
i just noticed yest that the algae is only growing on the rocks i got from that guy. every other peice i put in is fine.
i also remember the guy told me it was LAVA ROCK.

do you think that is whats causing the issue?
and if i take all that rock out and put new rock in wont it cause it to cycle again. i have quite abit of coral in now.
i amost feel better knowing it may be the rock and not something im doing wrong.

don't take my word on it, but i think that rock can hold on to phosphates. if this is the case, you need to do everything you've done and just wait for it to be used up. i've heard it can be months though...

Some people use lava rocks and other will not. Lava rock is high in minerals, well actually they are high concentrations of minerals that in theory can leach out. But to be honest if the rock was leaching into your tank the hair algae would sprout everywhere. How does your tank test?

If I were you I would pull the lava rock since its where the HA is growing, see if that fixes the issue…hell, nothing to lose really.

If you feel the rock is leaching minerals its not going to grow itself out. If its base rock and you think you can grow it out - than just nuke the rock and fast track this process.

well i want to take the rock out but most of my rock in the tank is from the same guy and is lava rock. prob about 70 percent. if i take this out will it be enough live rock in the tank still?
and if i put more rock in what is going to happen? if its going to cycle again my buddy has 55 reef and a 30 frag tank that i could put my coral in for the time being. but i would like to avoid that if all possible.

    ammonia- 0ppm
    nitrite-0 ppm
    nitrate- 0ppm
    phosphate- 0ppm
    calcium- 450
    ph-8.1
    temp 80

oh and it has slowly moved to other rocks but those are little chunks that i could get rid of manually in a few seconds. the main rocks are completly covered in it. and its about a inch long.

What kind of algae are you dealing with? There are many types of "hair algae". Spores of some algae can lay dormant 'til nutrients are available. Without actually cooking/bleaching the rock, it may come back.
