    well im kinda set on getting rid of the rock since im 90 percent sure thats the issue. plus i can get actually cooler looking rock from my buddy.
    so now i guess my questions not at all algae related.
    im more looking to get a opinion on the whole switch over and adding more sand.

    here is some pics to show that just the lava rock has a serious problem

    the first pic is when things were good

    the second pic shows now and i circled in red the rocks i got that are lava rock.
