Ok so I know that softies/leathers usually close up from time to time and I've been trying not to make a big deal out of this one but this is my prized, show size kenya tree coral that has been closed up for about 3 days now.
It closed the same day that I did my weekly 5% WC. I also dosed Kent essential elements and Red Sea's Calcium+ just like I've been doing for a couple months now.
I also changed my lights 2-3 weeks ago and gradually acclimated the corals to the new lights. Since the light upgrade, all corals been doing fine even the kenya tree in question. In fact all the corals look bigger and are spreading more sine the new light.
I've read that they sometimes close up when they are about to propagate itself. Is that what it's doing?
Has any other kenya owners experienced this?

Mine will close up for a day or two, and the base will get super fat. When it finally opens again one of the bigger branches will look like it's broken. After dangling for awhile in the current it will work itself free, and float away. A few days later it is like a game trying to find where the new piece attached itself. Good Luck

My leathers close up for up to a week and a half. I used to stress and move them around or rack my brain about water quality etc. Then I just gave up and said the hell with ya then. That's when I figuire out this is the time they are either shedding or getting ready to split.
My kenya had never closed since I got it a month ago until this past week. It closed for five days and when it finally did open there was a little one growing from it's base.

Oh that's a relief, somewhere in my brain I already know that leathers sometimes close to regenerate but it's just more comforting to hear it from others.
First time my toadstool closed up, man did I throw a hissy fit. And I was about to do the same for this Kenya. I'm giving it 5 more days before I throw a fit lol:cheesy:
I've had it for about 3-4 months now and I never dropped fragments so I was a bit worried.

I think you are all good. The first 6 months I owned mine nothing. Now I get a new frag every 2 to 3 weeks. I have 7 right now that have scattered throughout my 75 gallon.

My kenya trees and xenia and other weed corals are all being given away. Couldn't pay me to take one now that I know how prolific those dang things are. Yours will be fine, I can't kill mine.

Oh that would be great if I start getting frags. I have at lest 10 reefers waiting for frags of this kenya.
Weed=One of My favorite corals in the tank;)

I have mine pretty close to the top but with low flow.

Every time this coral frags itself, does it always shut down for a couple days?

I always notice the closing up for a day or two with the base getting bigger then once it opened up again then one of the branches would look broke. Another day or two it would just float away.
