I haven't had luck with sand-sifting starfish in small tanks. Is your sandbed new?

Well, depends on what you consider "new" ... my tank was set up about 2 months ago.. actually longer.. and it's been cycling ever since, so it's not THAT new but relatively. I've had the starfish for about a week now and it seems very happy and doint its job. So we shall see.. I hope for the best though because he is cleaning REALLY well!!!

    Update

Happy;D that I was able to fix the skimmer ... all is working perfectly now and my lfs guy said that he ordered my snails and they should be here next week... then the diatom will be taken care of, which has not gotten worse though... it's pretty much under control ...
Then I will think about adding my next fish, but only once everything has stablelized...
I have waited sooo long for this tank, I ordered it beginning of Sept. of last year and NOW it finally is coming together... but again, I'd rather take my time and add everything very slowly. I look at about 10 months to have the corals and everything else in there ... then it's time to celebrate :yelrotflm
But it's not always the goal, I just enjoy the journey!!!

Definitely the right attitude to take - don't get me wrong about that starfish I love those - I just have tried a couple on different tanks and they all died after a few months - their limbs start coming off.

Anthony Calfo once told me they need very large tanks with mature sand beds - he recommended 220 gallons minimum for what it is worth. Was your sand dry to start? Perhaps it would be possible to bury something in there for it to eat. I never tried that. Cool tank all the same.

Thanks for the comment ;D !!
Whart would you recommend to put in the sandbed without starting the cycle all over again?

    Happy tank and fishies

Well, it just turned daylight here and the fishies just woke up. The starfish and my coral banded shrimp are doing well too.... so I am happy... Pedrinho and Chequinho are swimming all over the place :goldfish:

After having read all these Horror stories about the sandsifter, I just fed him with a syringe while he was out.... hope that will help!

Not sure. I would start a post on 3reef Sponsor Reef Cleaner's board or just read some of his threads. He is an expert on sandbed crews. That said, I don't think you have to worry much about the sandbed on a new tank. Down the road, they become more important.

Glad to hear that! Hopefully that will do the trick. I personally have never had anything that groomed the sandbed like those starfish, just never have kept one going. I didn't target feed though and did not have a tank as big as yours.. Note the time when you notice the starffish is out... if it is out at the same time period every day/night, maybe you can start target feeding it then and train it. :) Worth a shot!
