I've had my hippo for well over a year and the thing STILL runs and hides in the rocks if I don't approach the tank just right. It's been my experience that they are very jumpy. Either way, regardless of the fish, it's also been my experience that they need a couple days to get used to their new home and stop hiding so much. If by the end of the week it's still hiding and not coming out at all, then I would wonder.
