Yes, definitely have no lens then. I was thinking they were supposed to come with lens but I guess they didn't. Lens would help tremendously I would think but then there is the spread issue of making sure light covers the whole tank. HMmm.... dilemna

I got Xp-g and xp-e. Mine look like this... uploadfromtaptalk1311120133069.jpg I didn't say those looked like good optics but it clearly looks like more of an optic then what mine look like. I added optics to mine and they look completely different then what you showed too. They look like this... uploadfromtaptalk1311120340861.jpg seeing as the variety of styles I figured it was plausible that they could have had a cheap optic on it.

^ Well, yes, there are other styles of optics.

But I assure you what you see in those pictures are stock XR-E CREEs. Yours look like your photo because that's what XP-Gs and XP-Es look like.

This is also why your optic style is different. As you could imagine, the optic that would fit on the XR-E won't fit on the XP-G/XP-E.

So none of those you just posted are mounted on boards then just the LED? Also the original poster's fixture doesn't have them mount on boards either? What is the size difference between the xr and xp. I know mine are quite tiny but those others seem comparatively large by comparrison.

I've not seen pics of them on little boards but rather the stars that were posted earlier. I'm assuming the star or board is behind the panel on my fixture.

The last pictures I posted are the diodes themselves, just as CREE produces them. You typically see them sold mounted on a "star", which is made of aluminum and provides some larger terminal for soldering. The star is not required if someone is taking the diodes and mounting them on another type of PCB.

XR and XP are two different series of LEDs. Those pictures are all quite magnified.

    XR series:

I knew that about the diodes being mounted on the star boards to make hobby soldering easier. So the xr series are more then twice the size or even more then the XP.

They seem to be doing really good so far. Also have that thread algae that I never had before under the T5HO's. THe most noticeable is the mushroom...he's looking especially better under these LED's. I'll get some pics up of the corals. I can't say if there is less or more growth....just seems like it does every day. :)
