    thanks for the replies. i've heard a few different stories....one is that they create a cocoon to sleep in (something to do with not putting off "fish smells" during the night to avoid predators), i have yet to see cocoon pieces floating around the tank in the morning. second i have heard they bury themselves into the sand, again i haven't see the little guy do this but it would explain why i can't find him at night. as for the daytime...he swims so rapidly i doubt i could even take a picture of him if i wanted to....

    thats some kind of parrot fish that does the cacoon thing, i saw that on discovery hd one time

    The "cocoon" is made out of a clear-ish mucous and doesn't really "float around the tank". They create this cocoon once they've settled into their sleeping spot which can sometimes be your rockwork or can sometimes be buried in the sandbed, depending on the species.
