Due to some odd circumstances, my change over from Sol to Vega is taking some time. I have one Vega and am waiting on another (more on the choice of number of units later).

I had 3 AI Sol's over my 60g. I have been insanely happy with the lights. I've seen growth, I've enjoyed the color, I love the controlability, and my wife is thrilled not to be burning her hands in the tank. LED's also allow for much cleaner, elegant rimless setups and the Sol has done that well.

Yesterday, I ended up with one Sol and One Vega on the tank side by side. Its no competition. The colors, which have been lovely, are now even lovier. The light is better distributed, there is more of it, and the color of the water is radiant. The amount of light even means I don't believe I need the third unit any more.

Add that to a slimmer fixture and fewer wires and, well... what comes after thrilderest?

I have to repeat, I've had very little to complain about with the Sol. It has been a great light and I would happily run it on tanks again. Wow though, the Vega is amazing.

Can you run the Vega and the Sol from the same controler? Also, can the Vega be mounted on the same rails as the Sol? I have 2 Sols, and need 2 more lights for the upgraded tank I am workign on. Was going to add Sols just because, that is what I have...but will the Vegas and the Sols work together? Or do you have to independantly control them and hang them?

The answers are, (a) I believe they can use the same controller but have yet to try; I will this evening, and (b) I have mine mounted on the Sol rails happily. They do work together and mine currently are (pending the controller question).

Are you using the AI controller or an Apex?

AI Controller. I was using the old one, and have now upgraded to the new one.

I bought a new Vega and will buy one more to replace the remaining Sol. I don't think the upgrade is available yet.

using the original sol controller the vega cannot be controlled. However the vega controller should be able to handle both.

"All versions of the AI Vega — the Vega Color and the Vega Blue in all colors — will cost $499 retail and come loaded with wireless control, although the existing AI Sol controller will not be able to control the AI Vegas.

    Found this on AI website.
    Sol to Vega Conversion
The conversion from the Sol to Vega will be similar to the first AI module conversion: pretty substantial. The majority of the internal components are replaced, with the exterior looking the same. When the conversion is complete, the performance will be virtually identical to the Vega and allow the use of PowerPucks and any other feature upgrades. A new Controller or Director will be necessary to control the upgraded modules, as previous Controllers cannot be used.

The price will be $250 per module. Due to this low cost, users who want to upgrade will need have their product registered and provide a serial number for each module to be upgraded.

from their write up they are probably already selling the upgrade kits to users who have the sols registered.

I sold 2 of my 2 Sols for $300 each. The upgrade is a waste for me. That said, my Sols are registered and no upgrade option was available.
