i meant just dont take it the wrong way.... my buddy has a geo metro... will top out about 115.....prolly one of the slowest cars ive drive.... just cuz something goes 80 doesnt mean its a fast car.......fast is a measurement of speed(time compared to distance or volocity) not speed(simply MPH)

no worries dude - just playing devil's advocate ;)

not sure on your definition of "fast" there. "fast" is a relative term. i'd say that geo is pretty dang fast too. I figure I can run about 20mph for several seconds... compared to something that can go 80+ for hours... well, the geo or coug will beat me in a race...

"fast" is all in the eyes of the beholder... what is the line that needs to be crossed before something is deemed "fast"? is that line in the sand always shifting as technology increases?

I agree the modern cougars aren't the fastest of all cars out there ever, but they are definitely faster than 90% of cars in the world today. (I made up that stat, my point is it is relative - if you just mean "fast" as compared to cars in general, that's going to include a 1988 Volkswagon Fox (122mph), 1993 Ford Aspire (74mph), 1998 Honda Civic DX (107mph), 2000 Ford Ranger (110mph), 2004 Kia Sedona (85mph), 2005 BMW X3 (110+mph), 2006 Lexus IS350 (144+mph) and a 2009 ZR-1 (167+mph) (all of which are "fast" as compared to horse and buggy)). Just saying, you can't say something that goes in excess of 100mph isn't fast without putting it in some sort of context. I don't believe anyone claimed the dude's cougar was a race car... just a regular ol' street car. And it is pretty darn fast.

I've come across plenty of little 4-cylinder bangers that thought they were fast... ::) (and a few that actually were).

ok ok def. understood to ne would compare 1/4 mile times not top speed

personally if it goes quicker than a 13.5 in a 1/4 mile i would in common talk say its fast.... i love the feel of a turbo 4 cylinder, im a honda guy myself. my close friend has a dodge colt, essentially a geo metro... but that thing has a turbo 4G63 out of an eclipse gst...dam thing is a rocket

i'm not a fan of small engines w/turbos... i don't like the feel of their downshift, but those can, admittedly, be some fast little cages and can be very fun to drive. I never did any mods to the Civic DX Hatch I had, but my cousin kept trying to get me to drop an Integra R engine he had in it...

I ended up selling that car for 5k after I had bought it new in '98, I sold it in '06 (still in near mint w/about 30k miles on it) and bought my current IS350.

I'm pretty sure I got as much as I did bc it wasn't modded (other than stereo/speakers)... unfortunately, though mods can be expensive, they're not great for resale (normally).

My taste is for cars that don't need heavy modifications to be, um, fast!

I like warranties and stock, personally. Though I by no means will dis the other side of this spectrum.

I have lots of little tuners around here that try to stand up to me in the vette, I love taking off sideways and being over 50mph before I get through the other side of the red light

Actually, I think the word you are looking for to define "fast" is acceleration. Velocity is distance/time, aka mile per hour (m/hr). So for a "fast" car, it would have a "fast" acceleration, which is where 1/4 times or 0-60 times come in. Otherwise fast could mean top speed. A car can get going really fast, it just might take it a while to get there. I drive a 4 cyl 1999 Subaru Forester, where the only mods are aftermarket air/fuel/oil filters  And yet a buddy of mine has a Dodge Neon with a cold air intake, performance exhaust, a fin on the back (omg! a fin!), you know your typical tuner car. Well in a race to about 50mph he only beat my car by 1 car length.

Some cars can be "fast" and you don't even realize it until you see it. Granted, I redlined the heck out of that thing, but that's ok :D It's a very slow car compared to Iraf's vette, but compared to the average rice rocket it's fast :)

I despise rice rockets. It would be nice to take a sawzall to the stupid wings and coffee fart can mufflers that are on most of them.

I agree with this 100%. If you want to go fast, get a bike :D
