Well I have had "Gill" my sailfin tang for the last 3 weeks now and has been doing grand except for the fact that he is really really stupid. As you all know tangs are herbivores and love to graze on algae in the fish tank, well on my pumps and powerheads grows some algae that he especially likes. Well about two weeks ago I'm playing some modern warfare 2 in my room when I look over to see gill stuck to the side of my koralia 2. Out of panic I run over to the tank unplug all the cords and he swims away as if nothing happened. A couple days later he decides to start grazing on my koralia again and gets stuck to the side, luckily I noticed him and unplugged it again. By now I'm thinking he understands that if he gets to close he'll get sucked in but nope he's just to stupid. I left this weekend to go snowboarding get back and I look at my tank everything is happy except I can't find the tang. Then my brother mentions that Gill got stuck on the koralia again today.. When will the fish learn......
I still can't find him so I decide to feed them, he still is know where to be found. Then I take a close look and he was stuck to the back side of my filter!! I have know idea how long he was there for. He's a tough fish because he should be dead by now. Any recommendations on how to fix the problem or should I just let stupid Gill do what he pleases? I also daily put a sheet of dried nori in the tank for him to munch on but he still goes and grazes on other algae also.

sorry about that, what type of filter do you have? The fish that I have had don't get stuck to powerheads or my overflow unless they're dying or dead.

Its just a hang on the back filter for polishing water. He isn't dying, if he were dying he would have died a while back. Its just so funny because he'll be stuck to the side completely helpless then i'll unplug it and he'll calmly swim away as if nothing happened.... I think he doesn't feel pain. ha ha

my female clown did the same thing to one of my powerheads, she was perfectly healthy but she some how got stuck to it and good thing i noticed cause she couldnt get herself free so i quickly unplugged the powerhead, she swam away and had a nice circle on her and had torn flesh but she healed up within a week and is perfectly fine

fish have small brains so their not the smartest :D

you could try covering the suctioning part of the powerheads and the filter with a coarse clothe, that might work but it will also lower the capacity of the powerheads and the filter.

thankfully she has learned her lesson too not swim that close to the powerhead, i think she was trying to host it or something. But that is deffiently a good idea

I wouldn't recommend unless it's a really necessary, usually fish are usually strong enough to swim away from powerheads. The filter in FW tank is covered because fish kept getting sucked in.
