my first car was when i was 18 and it was just a few years younger than I was. The car stalled almost everytime I stopped at a stop light. I had been pushed out of major intersections several times by police cars because it would just stall. Then one day on my day of my finals on my freshman year of college, my car stalls out in a major intersection. Nobody would help me move it. I had actually had a guy that was working at a store across the street come out and ask me how much i wanted for the car. I told him at this point he could have it (well he thought I was serious :) ) anyway that was the end of that car.......cracked a block!

Good story! :) I have no idea what a cracked block is but it doesn't sound good. The wonderful part though is that college freshmen are supposed to be poor which is why they eat frozen pizzas, drink beer, and drive cars that stall at busy intersections. 8)

Cracked block means the block of the engine itself cracked!

And FYI, a rod is what connects pistons to the crankshaft. My guess is more rod knock from a bad bearing on the crank shaft than a 'broken rod'. You usually never see a rod actually break. He would not be able to tell unless he unbolted the oil pan and actually looked.

Oh, and does the car have an automatic transmission, and if so, has it been replaced? I only ask as the car has high mileage (for an older American car!) and that could very well be the next to go :(

Thank you for joining in! :)

Ok, the engine itself cracked. Oooohhh, very bad.

The rod thing makes sense, kinda. Either way it's very serious.

Yes, it's an automatic. I learned on a stick but Jordan felt a little gun shy about driving one so we didn't even look at them.

Geez, maybe we should just say the heck with it and with the help of the mechanic, find a different car.

I HATE CAR PROBLEMS!! whew, needed to say that

    Lady J, 3 things
    1. a Dodge Viper is a STUPID car for an adult to buy a 16 year, most adults cant hadle that car
    2. With 200k miles, honestly I'd consider buying another car or buying another car similar and swapping the motors out! Check the local junkyards for a wrecked one;)
    3. your son sounds like an awesome kid with a good head on his shoulders. Congrats. hope my kid is that reasonable at that age;)

    good luck
