Thank you for your input Adam. We found a few Toyota's when we initially were car shopping. However, two different friends recommended not to get them as repairs are very expensive as compared to an American car. Since I know almost nothing on this subject I decided to take their advice, especially considering they know quite a bit about different cars.

I agree it's a losing situation, because again, it had high miles... FWIW, we bought it from a mechanic who obviously did excellent maintenance on it. It's just old and things wear out.

Reverting to the title of this thread, I just felt HORRIBLE because this happened on his birthday. Geez, why not a week before or a week after. :(

    1 word. SUBARU!

i have owned 2, my first when i was 17, 180k when i got it, BEAT THE LIVING S*** out of it! I mean drifting it, redlining it every day, jumping it, off roading it. I could not kill it. Then one night my drunk buddy drove it into a parked car.

Second one i bought for 600$ put a $120 headgasket into it and now have a great car with around 180k mi on it and it runs and drives great!

AWD is also great in the winters.

I will never buy anything but subaru. You can find cheap subaru wagons for around $1000. Where are you located?

Hey, thanks for your input! :) This sounds interesting and certainly worth looking into. I also like Suburu's. A friend of the family recently bought a new one and he loves it. They're rated very high for handling well in the snow and since we live in Wisconsin this is certainly a car to investigate.

Happy birthday to your son! I just finished paying off my gas sipping Honda 2 years ago. It feels good =]. I agree with the Subaru idea if you decide to go with something else. AWD and reliability is always good. And WRX's are pretty freaking cool for a 17 year old too. My cousin drove his second-hand Subaru into the ground throughout college and 6 years of grad school so reliability shouldn't be an issue.

*edit* Also he lived in Idaho so I assume he had to deal with some snow as well.

No Suburu's to be found. A friend of the family has an older Ford Explorer we might get. He's willing to sell it to my son for next to nothing. We're checking it out this weekend.

I'll tell him belated happy birthday. :)
