My Story

I have gone the "used method" and it has worked great!!!! I have gotten everything used and it could not have worked better. If you have the money you should get the core items new. The core items mean like Lights, protein skimmer, ect. I bought those 2 things new and got everything eles used and have had a great reef experience. My LFS have a used selection that if it is broken or not working they will not sell it. I bought tank, canopy, sump, pump, oak wood stand,protein skimmer(which i bought a new one of) and all the tubing for $300. I was looking for a 55 gallon that day and couldn't pass up the deal.You can find some amazing deals out there is you just look around. I own a swimming pool company and i go to different houses every single day and that week i walked into a house with a beautiful 150 gallon reef tank. Well i was talking about it and said i just bought a 70 gal. and the lady said that she was selling it all because it didn't catch her eye any more. So with all that said i traded work for fish and had a $2,000 shopping spree in her tank. I walked out with all of her 130 lbs of live rock, sand, coral, water(yea i know...pathetic and chiller. I would say i have gone the used method. 2 months later............My MH were getting real hot and i had a LFS guy come to my house to check it out and said i got atleast a $5,000 deal. I was pretty proud of myself at the time. His eye also spotted out my ricordia which at the time i just thought it was pretty so i got it and he said it was really rare and said its worth $800 to $1,000. The lady charged my $350 for it. I am truly amazed at the reefing industry and how it works. Its a huge money making industry and very intresting. Well that was 2 years ago and i am still into it. My ricordia is like a weed in my tank and doesn't stop growing. The mushrooms are atleast 3 inches across and have 2, to all the way up to 5 mouths. You gotta love it.
