i have my sun polyps for about a week now and they still won't open. i put them on the sand, i even reorganized my LR just so i could create a cave for them (i read they are not big fans of light). i target feed them with cyclop eeze and nothing. they come out just tiny bit but won't open. i try to feed them when only the actinics are on. should i wait till the actinics go off too? any other suggestions?

I feed mine after lights out. I have to spray them with water that's had mysis sitting in it for ~20 mins so it has the stench of shrimp in it, in order to get the polyps to open up.

Sun polyps typically don't open up unless they're hungry or currently feeding. If you have them at the bottom and in a shaded area, I would actually hold off on feeding for a few days to see if that gets them to come out.

I have talked to the owner of one of my favorite LFS about his sun corals... he told me that he trained his by target feeding them after lights off, then gradually worked the feeding time into the daylight hours so that when he fed the tank the polyps would come out. He said it worked for him.

Such a beautiful coral when the polyps are extended but very little exciting if not.
I agree with another poster to hold off on feeding until you see the polyps open up.Training them as your LFS guy told you might work too.

Funny...mine are always kind of closed during the day. Then when I feed in the evening, still with the lights on, they come out just when I am done feeding. Then they stay out for hours and almost most of the night.

Mine didn't open at a decent hour for about 2 weeks. I decided while feeding the tank that if they wanted to eat they would learn to come out at feeding time. At first I had to puff a little food on them and wait about 30 minutes for them to come out. Now, as soon as food hits the water they open right up!
