hey all, i live in kitchener ontario, ca. i use conditioned tap water in my tank. i know a lot of you would not advise this but everyone here does it. i tested my tap water and these are the readings:

    ammonia - 0.25 (almost 0)
    nitrites - 0
    nitrates - 0
ph - 7.4 (perfect for humans)
    alk - high

    i'd say thats pretty good.

It's the stuff that you can't test for that I would worry about. Do you get a water report from your local water company?

how do you test tds? i tried to get report and have heard nothing from the city. i did go on the website and 80% is from the river and 20% underground per water source wells.

they use chlorine, chloramine, small amounts of ammonia and uv sterilization. the city i'm in is an environmental city. we have clean water sighns everywhere and we meet and beat the requirements.

You need a tds meter to test for tds (tds=total dissolved solids).

Are those elements that you mention listed on a water report? Is chlorine, chloramine and ammonia all that is listed on the report? What are the amounts of these elements that are in the water?
