I put together a DIY overflow/wet/dry filter plus sump and am steadily working on it.

My question is on the filter part. I have a small plastic bug tank that sits on stilts inside the sump.. it has holes in the bottom of it to let water out. My overflow sucks water from the tank, through two cotton socks (one in the other) over my filtration setup which is:

top later: crushed coral picked up off the beach and rinsed well
middle layer: rough filter pad (no carbon)
bottom layer: hexa-rings (japanese product.. kinda like ceramic bioballs)

the water flows through that setup to the sump, which has a bit of crushed coral in it as well. I am debating on throwing either sand like I have in the tank or going and grabbing more of the muddy sand.. I would Ideally like to have some chaeto or other common sump algae put in there as well...

we just put the socks on the output of the overflow.. the LFS had something similar setup only the filters they used like our sock seemed to be either fleece or a course wool.. I can't quite figure it out.

    Thanks for the input.

Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking what the sock is made of? Are you literally using socks? I'm confused. :)

    Here are aquarium filter socks:
