    Yes.
One ends in an "s" and the other a "d" ;)

Mysis is the species name of a large number of small shrimp. Mysid is the term when referring to shrimp within that species :)

My Sis on the other hand is a female called Claire that shares the same parents as me

    Not really.

In the aquarium trade, if you see frozen "mysis" you are buying a freshwater shrimp. (yes, PE mysis are FW shrimp from Canada - like the ones found in the Great Lakes)

What you see in your tanks are mysids which are true marine animals.

Both are in the same family but are different genus all together.

    oops, genus, no species :)

    Mysidae is the family...
Genus Mysidopsis ... and mysid is just an abbreviation for that.
Species of what we see in our tanks is typically Mysidopsis bahia.

Mysis is the actual genus of mysis, not abbrevation needed for that one.

Got me on the technicality! :)

AFAIK there's no major difference for feeding purposes though, both nutritious little shrimp. If that's inaccurate I'm sure you'll straighten me out again. :)

    Nice info, Gresham
I always prefer SW live food for marine species, using FW food can lead to problems in the long run.

From what I've read this is the case most of the time but there is something about the way the shrimp are raised/captured/processed or something that does not lead to this being a problem with freshwater mysis. I forget where I read that though.
