I have a sudden "bloom" of these creatures in my tank. Been running for about two months from a fully cured tank that had been up for about 6 months. I have lots of various snails, a few small asterina stars and some brittle stars. I did have some aptasia but my peppermint shrimp took care of most of them. There are hundreds of these little things. What is going on?

Those look like hydroid jellies to me. But I can not say for sure. Try this link under the "Odds and Ends" section.

Looks like the first picture in the hydroid section. Anyone know if fish or inverts will eat these?

The population will just die back with time. I am not sure what eats them though. I have had the same thing happen in a newer tank a number of times. I never had to do an intervention to get rid of them.

You are correct on the Hydroid jelly and the fact that the only thing you need to do to irradicate the population is to lighten up on the nutrients in your tank. How often do you feed? I would recommend every other day. Eventually they will die off

It's really odd. I have had the tank up for a couple months, no fish yet and just doing weekly water changes. Not sure what caused the onset.

i dont want to hijack this thread, but ive recently noticed these guys in my sump. i set the tank up about two years ago and treated with copper for my puffer early on. i bought some live rock recently and it came with a hermit crab. i put the crab in the display tank and he lived well for a few weeks, so i decided to get 5 more to really test their ability. all of the crabs have lived until now, about two months after adding the last ones. is this and the starfish a sign that i can have inverts? so many times ive read that even after a tank was treated, it would leach the copper into the silicone and be unusable for inverts after that.
