a few days ago i bought my first sps coral. it was a green birds nest. the next day is saw some cyano in my tank and i heard that phosphrate remover can get ride of cyano. so the next day after i added the phosphrate remove i notice that the tipps of the birds nest stared to bleach. and now it is completely bleached. all my parameters are fine and my lighting is coralife lunar t5. is it the phosphrate remover that could of killed. thanks

Lowering the phosphate too quickly can bleach your corals. You should start with no more than 1/2 the recommended dosage during the first few weeks.

Removing phosphate too fast seems to sometimes shock corals. It's possible that you added too much GFO at once. It's often safer to slowly increase the dosage of GFO. Not much you can do now though unfortunately. I guess the only question is, is it bleached? Or did it RTN? If it is bleached and not dead, it should be able to recover. Sometimes moving it to a lower lit area for a while can help. Do you still see polyps? Or is there no tissue remaining?

I avoid any liquid phosphate removers and stick with GFO since it is much safer. Even then go slow, ramping up over a period of a month or so imo. I and many, many others have had horrible experiences with Blue Life which can devastate your tank by lowering PH and alk. I used 1/3 of the recommended dose and it killed my tang.

+1 to all the above- changes need to be done slowly and with tried-and-true methods, not miracle snake oil products.

Sorry to hear about your loss. FWIW, the birdsnest is one of the more (if not the most) difficult SPS corals to keep.

lowering phosphates too quickly can have negative effects which is probably the issue, also some corals just dont do well in certain systems, In one of my previous reefs I had a birdnest that grew like crazy, was able to keep purple, blue and red sps no problem. I tried a few times to keep green acros and every time they would not make it never did figure that one out.
