I found my "was healthy" Yellow Tang dead at the bottom of the tank this morning.
He has been so healthy for months now. Since June. He was eating good, swimming etc yesterday.
The only think I can think of, and I am not sure if it would cause anything is:
My water level was very low yesteday and my pump was sending a lot of air into the tank most of the day until I topped it off last night. I topped off with RO water as usual pre-heated.
Parameters all look fine. I am going to double check PH now.
He looked perfectly fine when I took him out.. nothing noticeable.

PH is fine, and everyone else in the tank looks perfect.
Could it just have been natural causes? (nothing I could have prevented)

sometimes things just happen beyond our controll...how long have you had him? was he a baby when you got him(how old) that could have very well been the cause. Sorry for the loss either way

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yes may have just been a natural death. If he had no symptoms physically or new behaviors then all your left with is parameters. If you introduced any new fish lately they could have brought something in or disrupted the balance of the tank.

Sorry about the loss of your tang, but I would not spend too much time trying to figure it out. Been there done that.:-/

Same fish in tank since July. No signs of anything. I got him in June and he was Medium size.
I only have 2 Percula clowns, 4 yellow tail damsels, and 1 six line wrass in a 90 with over 100lbs of LR.

Sorry for your loss. Salinity change from top off might have been a cause. Most likely it was just its time.

I only put in about 2 gallons to keep the pump from sucking air, and planned on adding another 2 or 3 this morning when I found him.

If he was a medium size fish in June, he was no where near the end of his natural lifespan.

But I agree, sometimes this "just happens".

I know this isn't a path most follow, but you can always have a necropsy done on deceased fish. It's too late for this one, as there is a basic protocol one must follow from the "moment" of death to secure the best culture results. The first few I had done by a vet, but that isn't the cheapest route. Your best bet is to befriend a pathologist that runs a lab:) The most "doable" option is to read up on necropsies and perform them yourself! You'd be surprised at what you can learn. If nothing else, you'll understand your fish better. Microscopes are also a really good investment. Better yet, one with a camera/video attached. There's some pretty cheap ones out there under a 100 bucks that would serve the purpose. Chances are you won't know what you are looking at, but you could send the pic to someone else who may.

Too early in the morning for this?

Could the excess micro bubbles kill him?
