    Hey All,

Well, I got home yesterday from work, and my wife asked me if I'd gotten another fish for the reef tank. I said no, and she said that there was one in there that looks just like the wrasse we'd lost months ago. I checked, and sure enough, the big red velvet fairy wrasse that we'd thought dead months ago (seriously, the guy was gone for 4-5 months) was swimming around mostly happily (being chased by the Kole tang as a newcomer of course). The fish seems happy and healthy (not super thin or anything, good color).

So, I know that wrasses can hide and sleep in the sand, but for MONTHS? That's crazy!

Maybe it was coming out at night. That could explain why you haven't seen it.

wrasses are odd. My blue star leopard wrasse hid in the sand for 14 days at first, i thought it had died so went searching for it. I scared it and it swam out and then right back into the sand bed for 26 days straight til it surfaced again. Now it only spends roughly 6 hours a day swimming then goes back into the sand for sleep i guess.

Fairy wrasse wouldn't sleep in the sand, very odd. Congrats!

It's not nice to trick the better half like that. You need to come clean before she finds the receipt you thought you destroyed. <jk> :D

Surely it had to be coming out at night when it was dark and peaceful. I seriously doubt it could survive that long without food.

Thanks for the responses, folks. It's indeed wierd. I was up a lot at night (7 month old daughter) and never saw him. He's one of the boss fish in a very peaceful tank, so I don't think he was scared. He's swimming around like he owns the tank. LOL. Totally random, wierd and cool. Glad to hear that others have had similar experiences.
