Yes when the pump cuts out the water wants to rush back down to the sump which then trips the check/flap valve and stops. I have 3 on hand just to have for spares so when i do my 1/2 year or annual cleaning I can replace it if needs be. It's good to have unions all all pipes. :D

Mind you I still need to install my 3/8" NPT John Guest Fitting and a air line for my full siphon inlet.

Check Valves have been know to fail.
I've never had one fail, but like everything other people have.

On my old 125 I had an electronic ball valve.
When power was applied to it it was in the open position. When the power went out it shut. I had it on a spray bar I had at the bottom of the tank buried under the rocks. It was there to keep water moving under the reef and keep any debris from collecting. It was drilled out the bottom of the tank to the return pump so if power failed there was a possibility of the entire tank draining to the top of the spray bar.

I never had it fail. It's a couple of hundred $. this was back when I was single and had money.

You don't need a john guest fitting for that. Just drill a hole in the cap and thread some 1/4" vinyl tubing in. Mine is silent. [IMG]

Well I have done a water test and it went without a drop of water so far, Second after reading all these about my check valve I replace my check valve with another one I had laying around that had no rubber flap in it because of a mod a friend of mine done but i put it in to see if it does fail would my sump handle it. And the test scores come back A+ and I will be fine if it happens to fail. Thanks for all the input and that electronic ball valve is bananas! lol

Yeah it is, but it was worth the money with the way I had my 125 set up.
    I loved that tank.
My wife made me get rid of it when we moved.

8 years later I got the 55 gallon I have now and am not really happy with it. It's to narrow to really do anything with.

If I had the money the minimum I would got with is a 75. Same length as a 55 but wider. A 90 is too tall for me. I don't like to use tongs or grabbers and it's a little hard getting to the bottom of the 55 at times.
