It will work, And I will have to dial in the valve to have it set correctly, Trail and Error with Patience will make it work. I've seen identical set ups up and running for years now and have no problem keeping the correct water level. :)

For that I may understand where your coming from so I'll try with holes and without to see what best works for me. I know there will be some noise and that's what the caps were for to reduce the noise, I just thought it needed air to start the siphon affect for the skimmer bar..

Yes for this design it is common for two drains on either side and they are tied into each other as you can see in my design on page one. The regulating valve is not for the draining of the two drains that are running into my sump(skimmer section) but just the T'ed off section of one drain into my sump in the fuge section for some raw DT water and nutrients for my micro algae. This is also shown in my design in page one.

Just depends on thickness of glass is it not for the strength of the tank?

And for algae growth on the skimmer bar for being under the lights isn't going to be a problem being that I will have weekly and monthly clean rituals and recordings. Just saying. :p

Not sure if the bracing would be an issue probably not on a 90 at least. you could look into euro bracing, which would give you that rimless look, provide strength and also a small lip to create some sort of net top.

OK... so not to get hung up on semantics, but this is no where near a Herbie overflow, or operates on the same principles as Herbie/Bean.... and it does not have to be, it is an overflow and that's fine.

Just so we are clear, on the overflow bar, the slit is on the top right, skimming the surface?

What you have is just a overflow, and there will be noise and if that is not a problem then it's good. Putting holes in the top of the caps will allow air in like any other Durso pipe and will not allow siphons and surging. The two ends of the bar will drain, they do not have to be tied together, but it's fine if they are. It really allows a smaller "skimmer bar" and still allows plenty of drain capacity. The DT level will be held to the top of the bar when pumps are off. You do not want any valve regulating any drain flow... if you did and it backed up it would overflow the tank... or would start a siphon and surge and empty, surge and empty.

Just be sure to tee off to your fuge on the bottom of the horizontal run of pipe to ensure a solid flow to the fuge. Much easier to regulate than say off the side where it is half full of water half air.

And I don't mean to side track. It looks like a great project. It will be a good looking tank.

Yes it is a surface skimmer, sorry to not mention that. And thanks for all the info.

    Thanks again.

If you just mean running it open-top then it's really just up to you. That might be a problem in your fish selection, (jumping fish), but you can make a screen top as Vinny says. I had my 29g with no canopy/glass top for 1.5 years and I like being able to look down into the tank. I had it on a 30" stand so it wasn't very high at the top of the tank. This might not be the case for yours (depending on height of cabinet).

I now have a 10g tank, that I do run completely rimless (removed the top frame, cabinet trim hides the bottom). It looks awesome and is holding fine, though I suppose I am taking a risk and for this reason would not do this with any larger tank than a 10 gallon (unless it was custom). Once again, I will have to be careful when or if selecting fish.

So where would be a good place to get a 90G rimless(euro brace) tank?

Links? Any info on if you had your own?
