I picked up a 12 gallon Nanocube for $20 off of craigslist.

Only problem is the fans won't spin and the powerhead/pump might not be at the rated flow.

    Two Questions :

    1. Does anyone know what the wiring diagram of the hood looks like? I took the hood apart and it seems like the magnetic ballast for the fans isn't working right, but I'm not sure what voltage should come out of it. I certainly don't have 12 V on the circuit board going to the fans. With the capacitor in the circuit I'm not sure how much voltage is needed.

    2. How can I tell what the flow of the pump is? I mean I guess I could take a 10 gallon bucket and see how long it takes to empty it right? Then do the math for gph. I'm thinking a new PH is in order anyway. It feels really weak.

    Thanks,

    Joe

im not sure about the voltage question but if it feels week it probobly is and all of the stock pumps for bio cubes, nano cubes, and all of those are weak. so i would say replace the stock pump with a PH or keep the stock pump and add another PH

+1 on replacement.. The problems you've listed are probably the reason for it being 20 bucks ;) I just replaced the pump on my g/f's 14g biocube with a MJ1200 - works Great and over doubled the flow. I have no idea about the fans :p

I had kinda decided on getting a new PH so that question was kind of already answered.

The power for the fans is the only part stumping me. The power comes in at 120 V directly to the magnetic ballast. When I took it apart I did not see a part number so I don't know what voltage it should supply to the circuit board and associated capacitor.

I googled for a diagram, but came up way short. If I knew the purpose of the parts I could replace them with stock electronic parts, etc.

Thanks for the replies so far. I hope someone has had this hood apart before and knows what I am after.

It is probably a 12v computer fan. I ordered my aquapod replacements from newegg.com.

Thanks Jeremy, I figured that was the case, but the board is not supplying 12V. I don't know if it is the board or the magnetic ballast.

Sorry, I read your post wrong. I thought you had one fan working and one not. I would make sure you have 110v going into the transformer and 12v coming out.

How does the capacitor affect the voltage needed on the other side of the ballast? Or does the capacitor work as a voltage stabilizer? I'm not sure. I did verify the 110 going in. I'll need some wire to check the voltage coming out.
