I use a rio nano skimmer. Does a pretty good job. As for lighting I did a DIY for my 5.5... I used 48 watts from a old nano cube and bought a retro kit from Nanotuners that added another 24 watts.. All jammed into a homemade hood... Here' the link.....

I just use an AquaClear 30 filter, a heater and an airstone. I put a Koralia-Nano to give a little more flow, and operate with only a 14W stock fluorescent. It is a FO tank now. The only thing I really have to do in order to work corals into it is get a small lighting fixture. Otherwise, a skimmer is not really needed on a tank that small IMO. Just do your water changes.

from looking around some posts about nano systems, it seems like many may go without the skimmer. anybody have nano experience, and do you use a skimmer or not?

Depends on what kind of a filtration set-up you have. some tanks might need one, others could go without. IMO, better safe than sorry, you never know when one could be needed. ie: something dieing when you're not around.

I am skimmerless on my aquapod. I just do weekly water changes.

Don't get one of those Current Fission Nano Skimmers if you decide to get a skimmer. I have one for my Nanocube and it was a waste of $30. It releases tons of bubbles into the tank, and any little movement will cause the thing to stop working, or just come apart altogether.
