I would guess that you can take the plastic off without worrying about a flood. My cube is rimless and I have seen plenty of conventional 10 gallons without rims. The silicone should be more than enough to hold everything together.

    Any pics?

Oh, there is a possibility that the glass is uneven under the plastic. It is cheaper to cover up a sloppy cutting job with plastic trim than it is to put everything together flush.

yea i think is should be fine because i filled it with water the other day and the weight of the water didnt put any pressure on the rim when i tryed to lift it. and it felt realy sturdy.
