if a nano with LR needs additional HOB filter to provide mechanical and biological filtration, why doesn't a larger traditional Berlin tank not need this (skimmer + LR = Berlin method)?

    a skimmer is mechanical filtration.
    LR is biological filtration.

sorry, my bad - HOB is being used for mech and chemical filtration. What's the comparable equipment in a Berlin tank?

Skimmer really just removes dissolved organic compounds, quite different from what a mechanical filter (ie filter floss) removes (particulates in suspension)

This particulate matter may include uneaten food, faeces or plant or algal debris. this is the basis of what end up in the cup. a skimmer fits in the mechanical filtration category.

There is a new sapphire nanoskimmer being released for the BC14/NC12. This is supposed to reside in the middle chamber. I am assuming that this will not leave any room to spare. Assuming that the skimmer is efficient, and cost aside, is it worth trading live rock/fuge for an efficient skimmer?? Keep in mind this is a biocube without room for hob type filtration.

i'm giving up. my 10 gal is still cloudy even immediately after a 1 gal water change, and i've been doing at least 2 changes a week for the past few weeks. just ordered a current fission nano-skimmer - i'd rather not strip the water completely, but just get things under control. we'll see how it does...

with the fission, or the sapphire nanoskimmer? From what i hear, the sapphire skimmers work well, but are expensive.
